Dull
I just lost 20 minutes of my life that I won't find again. I hated everything about it. The images are too crispy and I hate digital. There's no cinematic aspect about anything. And the worst thing is that there is virtually no musical atmosphere, making it one of the dullest pilot I've ever seen.
But... there may be something into it, as the story is original and could lead to something.
SUMMARY
I give it 3 out of 10. Bad.

A mastered twist
"Michael's Gambit" is an amazing episode, probably the best so far, thanks to an amazing mastered twist, proving that everything was planned from the begining.
Michael Schur is a very interesting and talented writer.
A great season finale.

Very good
With all the trouble Eleanor has on her journey, she is now a nice and pleasant person for the spectator. We are attached to her now, and that's good.

Unrepresentative
When I saw this episode for the first time, I wanted to put a very bad rating on it, because characters were boring and that notion of Good Place was very creepy. An after life without any spiritual aspect but only physical and that for eternity ? Feels very wrong to me, like a purgatory, at best.
But it was only 20 minutes, not enough to judge, so I gave to the show the benefit of the doubt and I refused to rate it before the end of the season. It was the best thing to do, because Michael Schur is not stupid, he just needed that pilot and more time to develop his plot.
Now I just finished the first season and I would be pleased to put a very good rating on this episode. Bad the first time, good after. That's why I'll just put a 4, average.
But, please, KEEP WATCHING.
